A Dark Room, reviewed
Nothing more than words and buttons, and one of the most memorable browser games of its decade. It starts as a quiet task of keeping a fire going, grows into running a small settlement, and then opens onto a map and a story we will not spoil.

Our take
A Dark Room opens on a single line of text: the room is cold. There is a button to light the fire. That is the whole game for the first minute, and it is enough, because the writing makes every new button feel like a small event.
Over the first hour the room becomes a camp, then a village with workers to assign and buildings to raise. Later the game widens into exploration on a map drawn in characters, with supplies to plan and a story that is told mostly through what you find. The whole thing can be finished in a few evenings.
The browser edition is free and open source, and it saves progress in your browser automatically. Paid editions exist for phones and consoles. It is ideal for people who like stories that move at their own pace.
A first sitting
Light the fire, follow the stranger, and stop when the first few huts are built. That is a satisfying first chapter.
Where to stop
The game saves on its own. Natural stops are a new building finished or a return from a trip outside; the next step will still be there tomorrow.
