Quick, Draw!, reviewed

A short, funny experiment from Google. You are asked to draw a bicycle or a cat in under twenty seconds while the computer calls out guesses. It is quick, oddly tense and very good for a laugh with someone beside you.

Our take

Quick, Draw! gives you a word and twenty seconds to draw it with your mouse or finger. As you draw, a neural network talks through what it thinks it sees, often getting it right before you finish and sometimes guessing wildly. A round is six drawings.

At the end you see which drawings it recognised and how other people drew the same things. That second part is the hidden delight: thousands of quick cats and bicycles side by side show how people simplify the world.

Know before you play: your drawings are added to a public dataset that researchers can use, which the site states up front. It is free, has no adverts and needs no account. As a two-minute break it is hard to beat.

A first sitting

Play one round on your own, then one round with someone else guessing alongside the computer.

Where to stop

One round is six drawings and ends by itself. That is the right size for a break.
