Reading a pay table: ways, lines and multiples
Ways and lines, why most spins return less than the stake, and how to read a 'to 1' price on the card and dice tables.
Ways
Colossus Gate pays by ways. A symbol that appears anywhere on reel one, anywhere on reel two and anywhere on reel three makes a three-reel way. If reel two shows it twice, there are two ways, and the pay doubles. With four rows on five reels, the most ways a single symbol can make is 1,024.
That is why the pay table for Colossus Gate shows small numbers: they are paid per way and multiplied. A colossal 2 × 2 block counts as two symbols on each of two reels, which is how it multiplies ways so quickly.
Lines
Mirror Runes and Drake Hoard pay along fixed lines: twenty paths in Mirror Runes, ten in Drake Hoard. A line pays when three or more matching symbols sit on it from the leftmost reel. Your stake is shared evenly across the lines, and our tables show each pay as a multiple of your whole stake so you never have to divide in your head.
Prices on the tables
The card and dice halls quote prices such as '4 to 1'. That means a winning call returns four times the stake on top of the stake itself: 10 shards at 4 to 1 brings back 50. 'Even money' or '1 to 1' doubles the stake. A push simply returns it.
Watchfire 75 quotes returns instead, such as ×1.4 for one line: the figure already includes your stake, so 10 shards on one line bring back 14.
A return below the stake is a loss
Reel halls often return something smaller than the stake: three runestones might bring back 4 shards on a 10-shard spin. Many games celebrate those moments with lights and sounds. We do not. The verdict line on every hall says plainly '4 back from 10 shards: 6 down on the round', because that is what happened.
