About Gapwatch

Gapwatch is an old card game in new stone. Two cards are dealt face up from a six-deck shoe. The number of ranks between them is the spread: a five and a nine have a spread of three (six, seven, eight). Then a third card is dealt. If its rank falls strictly between the first two, the watch holds and you are paid by the spread; if it lands on or outside either tower, the round is lost.

Narrow gaps are hard to hit, so they pay more: a spread of one pays 4 to 1, two pays 4 to 1, three pays 2 to 1, and four or more pays even money. Two neighbouring cards, such as a seven and an eight, leave no gap at all; the round is a push and your stake comes back. A pair also starts a different path: a third card is drawn at once, and if it makes three of a kind, it pays 11 to 1.

The one decision is whether to raise once you see the spread. Raising doubles your stake for the round. A wide spread of seven or more is the only place where a raise tends to help over many rounds; anywhere else it mostly makes the swing bigger.

How a round works

  1. Choose a stake and press Deal. Two cards land face up.
  2. If they are neighbours, the round is a push. If they are a pair, a third card is drawn for three of a kind.
  3. Otherwise read the spread, then Raise (double your stake) or Call (keep it).
  4. The third card falls. Between the towers pays by the spread; anywhere else, the stake is lost.

Fair play

Every result is drawn in your browser from the cryptographic random number generator built into it, the same source used to protect passwords. Nothing adjusts the draws to what you have staked, won back or lost, and no result is held back for later. Over many rounds every hall returns a little less than is staked, as casino-style games do; that difference is the reason the shards keep moving, not a promise of anything.
